Microsoft Lync a really cool UC (unified communications) tools for our office needs. It saves us hundreds of dollars in travel, telephone, and time cost over the past year. Now my PBX system becomes a more advance IP-PBX that can do multi-functions.
Some of the vendors that involved in UC are (IBM, Mitel Networks, Avaya, Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Siemens, Nortel, Alcatel, Oracle, Teleware.
I setup My Lync server with Windows 2008 R2 Standard with Lync 2010 Enterprise. The setup was pretty straight-forward. I jot down some pro’s and Con’s with my project.
Positive
- Emergency call Support (E911)
- Nice Search user feature (outlook contacts via global address list)
- Instant-Message, Voice/Video Conferencing, VOIP Voice-Over-IP
- Web Base Lync Client like AOL AIM Express (Lync Online that might come with office 365)
- Windows 7 phone integration
- Desktop sharing
- Web conference (videoconference + content sharing)
- File transfer
- Email integration
- Windows and Mac Support
- Works well with Polycom, Aastra, Snom, Plantronics deskphones
Negatives
- User interface looks like Cisco CUPC
- Cost
- No 1080P video resolution support
- Bandwidth control? Yes, we have QoE on our networks but why not control the flow of voice/video quality
I try using Cisco CUPC and Lync on the same active directory accounts and the SIP trunk for IM and making voice call in between these two application works fine!
